A Brief History of Vernon Hills
Vernon Hills has a relatively young history compared to many of its Lake County neighbors. The community traces its roots to 1958, when developers Quinn Hogan and Barney Loeb built a modest subdivision of about 125 homes on what had previously been farmland. The village officially incorporated on July 16, 1958, starting with just a few hundred residents.
Growth came steadily through the 1960s and 1970s. In 1971, the annexation of land near the intersection of Illinois Routes 60 and 21 set the stage for one of the community’s defining landmarks: Hawthorn Mall, which opened in 1973 and quickly became a regional shopping destination. By 1980, the population had climbed to nearly 10,000 residents.
The 1980s and 1990s brought continued expansion, as the village annexed additional areas that became neighborhoods like Corporate Woods and Centennial Crossing. Portions of the historic Hawthorne Mellody Farms and parts of nearby Half Day were also incorporated during this period, helping shape the Vernon Hills we know today.
Today, Vernon Hills is home to more than 26,000 residents across roughly 40 subdivisions. What began as a small planned community has grown into one of the most active retail and residential hubs in the northern Chicago suburbs, while still holding onto the welcoming, close knit feel of its early years.
