A Brief History of Mundelein

Mundelein’s story begins in 1835, when Peter Shaddle became the area’s first known settler, building a log cabin on land that would later become the grounds of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Soon after, a group of English tradesmen, escaping an industrial depression back home, settled the area and named it Mechanics Grove in honor of the millwright, wheelwright, and carpentry trades they had left behind.

The community’s name changed more than once over the following decades. It became Holcomb in the 1850s, honoring local civic leader John Holcomb, and later took the name Rockefeller before settling on Area, a name inspired by a local sales training school built on the site. In 1924, the growing village took its final name, Mundelein, in honor of Cardinal George Mundelein, who purchased the property to reestablish the University of Saint Mary of the Lake, still known today as Mundelein Seminary.

That seminary became the center of a defining moment in the village’s history. In 1926, Mundelein hosted the closing events of the International Eucharistic Congress, drawing several hundred thousand visitors to a village whose entire population was only around five hundred people at the time. That single event put Mundelein on the map and helped shape the community identity that still carries through today.
